WGCM began broadcasting in 1928 and was owned by Gulf Coast Music Co. [1] [2] It briefly broadcast at 1350 kHz, before its frequency was changed to 1210 kHz later in 1928. [2] Its frequency was changed to 1240 kHz in March 1941, as a result of the North American Regional Broadcasting Agreement . [ 2 ]
On September 1, 1997, the station got FCC permission to greatly boost its power and height above average terrain (HAAT) to expand its coverage area to the Gulf Coast. The station increased its output to 100,000 watts and started broadcasting from a new 1,400-foot (430 m) tower, covering most of Southern Mississippi, including the Gulf Coast and parts of Alabama and Louisiana.
