McAllen High School is one of four high schools serving the McAllen, Texas area as a part of the McAllen Independent School District. It houses approximately 2200 students from grades 9–12. The school originally opened in 1909 and moved to its current location at 2021 La Vista Avenue in 1963.
Prior to the establishment of Memorial High School, the school and its building were originally opened and operated as Brown Middle School. The high school opened in 1980, at its current location, 101 East Hackberry Avenue McAllen, Texas, United States. The school colors are Columbia blue and bright gold and the mascot is a mustang.

Avila attended McAllen High School. As a senior, he averaged 21.6 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.1 blocks and 1.6 steals, being named to the Class 5A Texas Association of Basketball Coaches all-state team. After graduating, Avila was the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,865 career points. [2]
