The institute was established by the government of Uganda in 1920, as a cotton research centre. Over the years, through mergers with other institutions, the centre was transformed into a comprehensive agricultural research and training institute. In 1952, BATI began offering a two-year certificate course and a diploma course was introduced in 1960.

African Rural University was established in 2006 [4] and accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education in 2011. [5] It was the first university in Africa that has focused on teaching sustainable agriculture exclusively to women. [6] The course work is 60 percent theoretical teaching and 40 percent practical implementation. [7]
The campus, then named Lira University College, [12] admitted its first students in August 2012 (100 of them). [13] It continued operating in this capacity until the Ugandan Parliament (Act No. 35, July 2016) elevated it to an independent public university. Since 1 August 2016, it has been referred to as Lira University. [10] [14]
African College of Commerce and Technology was established and commissioned as a business education institution under the name African College of Commerce on 14 April 1986. [3] It was registered and recognized by the Ministry of Education in Uganda in June 1986. [4] The college had its first graduation ceremony in 1990. [5]
