Walker lost 24 of his plates in a shipwreck off Great Yarmouth, when he returned to England in 1802. A list of those was given in the catalogue of a sale of his remaining plates and impressions from the lost plates, at Sotheby's, on 29 November 1822. A portrait of Alexander I was published after his return, on 1 May 1803. [1]
In 1821 Walker built his first lighthouse, the West Usk Lighthouse, near Newport, South Wales. [1] He went on to build another 21 lighthouses. [2] Walker was the senior partner of the consulting engineering firm of Messrs. Walker and Burges [3] (of Limehouse), Alfred Burges having first become his pupil in 1811 and risen to partner in 1829. [3]
