In July 2017, the PRC's state news agency Xinhua issued a style guide stating that for geographical references, the region should be named "Taiwan Area" (台湾地区) or "Taiwan" and that it was 'generally now not called' "Taiwan Province". Its reason for doing so was ostensibly to "[take] into account the psychological feelings of Taiwanese."
