The Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan was the first such organization to be established in 1840 on the grounds of the Thian Hock Keng Temple. [1] However, the SHHK also served other members of the Chinese community who came from other parts of China. [2] In 1929, the philanthropist Tan Kah Kee became the president of Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan. [3]
A total of 185 associations, comprising most of the clan associations in Singapore, joined the SFCCA. [1] [5] The first head of the SFCCA was the banker Wee Cho Yaw, who also chaired the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan. He was succeeded by Chua Thian Poh in October 2010. The current President is Thomas Chua Kee Seng. [7]
As the long-time president of the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan, Tan Lark Sye contributed generously to charitable and educational causes throughout his life. He provided strong support for educational institutions under the auspices of the association, including Kong Hwa School, Tao Nan School, Nan Chiau Girls' High School, and Chongfu School.
The Hokkien Clan Association (otherwise known as the Hokkien Huay Kuan) started Tao Nan School on 18 November 1906. It was one of the six modern Chinese schools in Singapore with a curriculum influenced by the educational reforms in China at the end of the 19th century. [ 2 ]
In 1972, he was head and spokesman of the ASEAN Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Wee also headed the Hokkien Huay Kuan (clan association) from 1972 to 2010, [9] and was founding president of the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA), an umbrella group for 190 associations, from 1985 to 2010. In 1840, the clan association Hokkien Huay Kuan serving the Hokkien community was formed within the temple ground of Thian Hock Keng. [2] In 1849, the Chung Wen Pagoda and Chong Boon Gate were added to the right of the main temple.
The Old Tao Nan School [a] is a historic building in Singapore, located along Armenian Street in the Museum Planning Area, within the Central Area.The building was originally built for the Tao Nan School to serve the local Hokkien community, but the school has since been relocated to its current location in Marine Parade.
Ai Tong School is affiliated to the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK) since 1929. [8] It is the second oldest school amongst the five schools that are affiliated to the SHHK, the oldest being Tao Nan School. [3]
