The Bom Jesus was a Portuguese nau and Indiaman that set sail from Lisbon, Portugal, on Friday, March 7, 1533. Its fate was unknown until 2008, when its remains were discovered during diamond mining operations on the coast of Namibia , near Oranjemund .
The Bom Jesus Biological Reserve was created by decree on 5 June 2012 and is administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation. [2] It is classed as IUCN protected area category Ia (strict nature reserve).

Author and fellow Jesuit Anthony De Mello was also from Goa and mentions the basilica in his writings. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is more than 408 years old and is open to the public every day.
