Optical storage is the storage of data on an optically readable medium. Data is recorded by making marks in a pattern that can be read back with the aid of light, usually a beam of laser light precisely focused on a spinning optical disc. An older example of optical storage that does not require the use of computers, is microform.
Standards. See also. v. t. e. In computing, an optical disc drive (ODD) is a disc drive that uses laser light or electromagnetic waves within or near the visible light spectrum as part of the process of reading or writing data to or from optical discs. Some drives can only read from certain discs, while other drives can both read and record.
WORM drives preceded the invention of the CD-R, DVD-R and BD-R.An example was the IBM 3363. [1] These drives typically used either a 5.1 in (13 cm) or a 12 in (30 cm) disc in a cartridge, with an ablative optical layer that could be written to only once, and were often used in places like libraries that needed to store large amounts of data.
Backup. In information technology, a backup, or data backup is a copy of computer data taken and stored elsewhere so that it may be used to restore the original after a data loss event. The verb form, referring to the process of doing so, is "back up", whereas the noun and adjective form is "backup". [1] Backups can be used to recover data ...
As of 2021, multiple consumer-oriented, optical-disk media formats are or were available: Compact Disc ("CD"): digital audio disc. CD-R: write once read many (WORM) CD. CD-RW: rewriteable CD. DVD: digital video disc. DVD-R: WORM DVD defined by the DVD Forum. DVD-RW: rewritable DVD defined by DVD Forum. DVD+R: WORM DVD defined by the DVD+RW ...
Optical discs. An optical disc is a flat, usually [note 1] disc-shaped object that stores information in the form of physical variations on its surface that can be read with the aid of a beam of light. Optical discs can be reflective, where the light source and detector are on the same side of the disc, or transmissive, where light shines ...
An Ultra Density Optical disc, or UDO, is a 133.35 mm (5.25") ISO cartridge optical disc which can store up to 30 GB (gigabytes) of data. The second generation UDO2 media format was introduced in April 2007 and has a capacity of up to 80 GB. It utilizes a design based on the Magneto-optical disc, but uses Phase Change technology combined with a ...
Optical disc packaging. Stacks of compact disc jewel cases. Optical disc packaging is the packaging that accompanies CDs, DVDs, and other formats of optical discs. Most packaging is rigid or semi-rigid and designed to protect the media from scratches and other types of exposure damage.
