Savusavu is located on Fiji's northern island of Vanua Levu. It can be reached by plane from Nadi (one hour) or by ferry from Suva or Lautoka (approx 12-hour trip). It is famous for its hot springs, located mostly opposite the Hot Springs Hotel – although at low tide the steam from numerous smaller outlets all along the foreshore can be seen.
The resort's restaurant is called Dick's Place in honour of Smith who died, aged 81, in July 2012 on the island. [2] In 2000, MacFarlane sold his parcel of the island to the other two partners and those 400 acres (162 ha) are now used for organic farming and the continuation of the coconut plantation for the supply of the resorts.
The resort has surfing, sport fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling and kayaking. There is also a pool, spa, workout facility and tennis court along with a restaurant facility and two bars. There are seven main surfing breaks on Tavarua: Cloudbreak, Restaurants, Tavarua Rights, Swimming Pools, Namotu Left, Wilkes Pass, and Desperations.
On its northwestern tip is situated the Dere Bay Resort [3] and the Koro Beach Resort. [4] A residential subdivision, Koro Seaview Estates [ 5 ] was established around Dere Bay Resort in 1989 and about 60 homes have been established in the development as of 2009 [update] , including a reconstructed 300-year-old home imported from Java , Indonesia.
