Gateway West's twin-sister building, Gateway East, was located directly across from it on Avenue of the Stars. Gateway East, was the second high-rise building completed in the new redevelopment. Gateway West was demolished in 2015 to make way for an expansion of Westfield Century City. [3]
Century Towers Residences are twin 28-story luxury condominium skyscrapers and the first residential project constructed in Century City, Los Angeles, in the U.S. state of California. The buildings were designed by I.M Pei and developed under the aegis of Alcoa Properties, located along the southern boundary of Century City on Avenue of the Stars .
The plan calls for a building 2,000 feet (610 m) tall and feature commercial elements that augment residential use. It was the result of a company-wide internal competition at Gensler to replace the Chicago Spire. [1] [2] As of June 2016, the building is conceptual, [3] and Maxim writer, Scott Tharler, considered the project unlikely. [4]
Later, the land became the backlot of 20th Century Fox. [2] It was later sold to Alcoa, which hired real estate developer William Zeckendorf (1905–1976) to develop Century City. [2] The first building on the avenue, the Gateway West Building, was designed by architect Welton Becket (1902–1969) and built in 1963.
In 1997, Davis bought the building back from La Salle, for $253 million. [11] In 2000, Davis sold the building again, to billionaire Donald Bren's Irvine Company, for $350 million. The Century Plaza Towers are two 44-story, 571-foot (174 m) twin towers in the Century City neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. They are the tallest buildings in California outside Downtown Los Angeles and San Francisco. Commissioned by Alcoa, the towers were designed by Minoru Yamasaki and completed in 1975. [6]
