Between 1890 and 1893, the mule cars were replaced by electric streetcars and in 1912 the system came under the ownership of Illinois Traction Company. Buses were first introduced in 1925 and in 1931 the streetcars made their final run. National City Lines bought the system in 1936, renaming it Quincy City Lines.
RTA was created after a referendum in 1974. In 1973, CTA had instituted its first major service cuts, [6] and several suburban bus companies, including Evanston Bus Company and Glenview Bus Company had ceased operations, forcing Evanston to make arrangements with CTA and Wilmette to start a municipal service.
