Early life. Garner was born James Scott Bumgarner on April 7, 1928, in Denver, Oklahoma, (now under Lake Thunderbird). [ 2 ] His parents were Weldon Warren Bumgarner (1901–1986), [ 3 ] a widower, and Mildred Scott (née Meek; 1907–1933), who died five years after his birth. His father was of part German ancestry.
