The area of the province of Hưng Yên has been inhabited for millennia. Under the Ngô dynasty, it was called Dang Chau.It was then renamed Thái Bình prefecture under the Early Lê dynasty, Dang Chau and Khoái Châu phủ under the Lý dynasty and Long Hưng garrison and Khoái lo under the Trần Dynasty.

On February 25, 1890, Governor-General of Indochina Jean-Luc de Saint Peauxpa has signed a decision to merge all the Red Riverside rural districts of three provinces Bắc Ninh, Hưng Yên, Hải Dương to form new administrative unit Địch Lâm garrison (荻林道, Địch Lâm đạo) to deal with Tán Thuật Uprising in the East of Hanoi.

On February 24, 1979, Văn Yên was dissolved. 9 Văn Giang communes and 5 Yên Mỹ communes were merged into Khoái Châu to become Châu Giang rural district (州江縣, huyện Châu Giang). The remaining Văn Yên communes have been merged with Văn Mỹ communes to become Mỹ Văn rural district (美文縣, huyện Mỹ Văn).
Nguyễn Văn Trỗi (1 February 1940 [1] – 15 October 1964) was a Vietnamese revolutionary and member of the NLF (National Liberation Front). He gained notoriety after being captured by ARVN forces while trying to assassinate United States Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara and Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. who were visiting South Vietnam in May 1964.
