The area governed by the council. Limerick City and County Council (Irish: Comhairle Cathrach agus Contae Luimnigh) is the local authority of Limerick City and County in Ireland. It came into operation on 1 June 2014 after the 2014 local elections. [1]
It consists of the counties of Clare and Tipperary, and the city and county of Limerick. Limerick City is the economic centre of the region. It spans 10,511 km 2 , 14.95% of the total area of the state and as of the 2022 census , it had a population of 505,369.

Following the 2024 Limerick mayoral election, John Moran was inaugurated as the first office-holder on 21 June 2024. Prior to June 2024, it was the title used by the chairperson of Limerick City and County Council. [3] Prior to the amalgamation of the city and county councils in 2014, the mayor was the chairperson of Limerick City Council. [4]

Previously Limerick County Council held its meetings at County Buildings in O'Connell Street. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The county council moved a new facility, which was designed by Bucholz McEvoy, in 2003. [ 3 ] The building was awarded first place in the Annual Business Week / Architectural Record Awards in 2004. [ 4 ]
