The 5th Field Artillery Regiment was constituted as part of the Regular Army in January 1907. Individual battalions have lineages which date back further. Currently, it is a parent regiment under the U.S. Army Regimental System, with a single active battalion, the 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery, which is assigned to the 1st Division Artillery, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas.
One battalion of the 5th Field Artillery, 1-5 FA, is derived from Captain Charles Wollstonecraft's Company. Wollstonecraft's Company earned credit for the Louisiana 1815 Campaign. This credit is not shared by the 5th Field Artillery Regiment, since 1-5 FA is the only battalion in the regiment with earned credit for this campaign.
The 142nd Field Artillery Regiment was inducted into Federal service on 6 January 1941, at Fayetteville. [33] The 142nd Field Artillery Regiment was ordered the unit moved to Fort Sill, OK where the 3rd Battalion was disbanded. As a result of force reductions following the fall of the Berlin Wall, the DIVARTY inactivated two battalions (2-41 FA and 6-41 FA in 1991). In return, 6-1 FA (from 1st Armored Division) and 3-35 FA (from 72nd FA Brigade) were attached to the division. When 3-1 FA returned from Operation Desert Storm, it was also attached to the division. The unit was designated as a subordinate unit to 7th Infantry Division, 1 October 2012 The 1st Battalion, 377th Field Artillery Regiment was officially inactivated February 2014. For the purpose of standardizing, the 17th Fires Brigade was officially renamed 17th Field Artillery Brigade on 19 February 2014.
