Belle Isle Park, known simply as Belle Isle (/ b ɛ l ˈ aɪ ə l /), is a 982-acre (1.534 sq mi; 397 ha) island park in Detroit, Michigan, developed in the late 19th century. It consists of Belle Isle , an island in the Detroit River , as well as several surrounding islets.
It opened in 1895 with a few deer and a bear. Control of the facility passed to the Detroit Zoo in 1941. [4] The original zoo closed in 2002, but in 2005, the Detroit Zoo opened the Belle Isle Nature Center at a location east of where the former zoo had been, with fewer animals than the zoo had had before closure. A small herd of 15 mostly white European fallow deer resides at the Belle Isle Nature Zoo on Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan. Until the turn of the 21st century, this herd had the run of the island; the herd was thereafter confined, with extirpation being the initial goal. [citation needed]
