On the afternoon of July 8, 2020, a violent and deadly drillbit tornado struck the area between the towns of Ashby and Dalton, Minnesota. [1] [2] [3] The National Weather Service in Grand Forks, North Dakota rated the worst of the damage from the tornado EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.
A National Weather Service survey team will fan out to three northern Minnesota counties — Aitkin, Crow Wing and Carlton — to check out damage and try to determine if any tornadoes touched down.
The tornado caused significant damage in neighborhoods near the southern edge of the Ross Barnett Reservoir, downed utility poles at Pelahatchie Creek along MS 25, and removed shingles from homes further east. The tornado damaged sheds, outbuildings, and chicken houses south of Ludlow and caused major damage to a manufactured home along MS 483.
Ashby was platted in 1879, and named for Gunder Ash, an early Norwegian settler. [5] A post office has been in operation at Ashby since 1880. [6] On July 8, 2020, areas north of Ashby were struck by a violent EF4 tornado. The twister killed one person and destroyed three farmsteads. [7]

DULUTH — A tornado watch was set for parts of central Minnesota from St. Cloud and Monticello to Brainerd and Cloquet until 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.
