Ken Davies was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts. [3] He attended Yale University , where he painted his first important oil painting , "Lighthouses in the Alps". The work captured the attention of New York City cultural figure Lincoln Kirstein , who helped Davies attain showings of his early works in 1950 at the Hewitt Gallery.
Davies later painted two additional views of the falls c. 1766. His work was not well known until after a 1953 auction from the Earl of Derby 's library. [ 1 ] [ 7 ] These paintings were then shown as part of a major exhibition devoted to Davies, 2 July – 4 September 1972, at the National Gallery of Canada .
Italian Hill Town is an early 20th century oil on canvas painting by American artist Arthur B. Davies. It depicts a town set on a hillside in Italy (such towns are commonly referred to as Italian Hilltowns). Davies was a frequent visitor to Italy, especially after 1923, when he was in poor health and found it beneficial. He died there in 1928.

In 1890, Davies submitted his painting Under the Burden and Heat of the Day to the National Gallery School's Travelling Scholarship competition, but lost. Nonetheless, private collector James Oddie purchased the painting and later sold it to the Art Gallery of Ballarat. Davies used the funds from this purchase to travel to Europe.
