Mike Smith officially became the Northern Arizona University's Director of Cross Country and Track in 2017. In 2024, it was announced that the 2024-2025 academic year would be Smith's last as Director; he would leave NAU to lead a Nike-sponsored professional running team based in Flagstaff. [11]

While at Willow Canyon, Veloz excelled in both soccer and track and field. She set multiple school soccer records, including most goals and points scored in a single game, season, and career. In track and field, she was an Arizona state champion in the heptathlon and set the school record in the javelin throw.
