The black-backed butterflyfish or blackback butterflyfish (Chaetodon melannotus) is a species of butterflyfish (family Chaetodontidae). It is widespread through the Indo-Pacific area from the Red Sea and East Africa to Samoa, to southern Japan and throughout Micronesia.
The black butterflyfish is found at depths of 2 to 20 metres (6.6 to 65.6 ft) [ 1] in rocky areas which have good coverage of coral and algae in lagoons and on seaward reefs, they can occur in estuaries. It is an omnivorous species, consuming algae, coral, and small benthic invertebrates. They are oviparous and breed as pairs.
Butterflyfish mostly range from 12 to 22 cm (4.7 to 8.7 in) in length. The largest species, the lined butterflyfish and the saddle butterflyfish, C. ephippium, grow to 30 cm (12 in). The common name references the brightly coloured and strikingly patterned bodies of many species, bearing shades of black, white, blue, red, orange, and yellow.

The vagabond butterflyfish has a whitish body which is marked with two series of thin dark diagonal lines perpendicular to each other, forming a chevron pattern.
