In 1882 the set was taken over by Charles Annandale whose edition of 1890-93 was expanded to 14 volumes. [3] Blackie and Son was bought out by Gresham Publishing Company in 1901 and republished as the New Popular Encyclopedia, and in 1906 as the Modern Encyclopedia of Universal Knowledge. [4]
The set was originally published in 1922 in 8 volumes as Compton's Pictured Encyclopedia by F. E. Compton and Company of Chicago. It was titled "Pictured" because no other encyclopedia at the time had as large or as diverse a collection of illustrations. [2] The encyclopedia was expanded to 10 volumes in 1924 and 15 in 1932.
An index to the entire set was created that year as well, and was the first of its kind for Britannica. Being only 187 pages long, it did not warrant its own volume, and was sent to bookbinders with instructions to include it at the beginning of volume 1, the dissertations volume, which had been printed in 1829.
