The Palmerston North City Council is the territorial authority for the city of Palmerston North in New Zealand.. The council is made up of a mayor elected at-large and 15 councillors, with 13 elected from a city-wide general ward (Te Hirawanui Ward) and 2 from a city-wide Māori ward (Te Pūao Ward).
It contains the Palmerston Shopping Centre, the City of Palmerston council offices, Frances Mira Mall, a sporting complex, a library and bus terminal. Its main core is bounded by University Avenue to the northwest, Chung Wah Terrace to the southwest, Rolyat Street and Temple Terrace to the southeast and Roystonea Avenue to the northeast.
At the time, Palmerston North was an isolated village in the midst of a native forest that covered inland Manawatu. The population was approximately 800 people. The first elections on 9 August 1877 returned a council with nine members, including George Snelson as the first mayor. Snelson is regarded as the founding father of Palmerston North. [4]
Before the 2023 census, Aokautere Rural had a smaller boundary, covering 83.31 km 2 (32.17 sq mi). [1] Using that boundary, Aokautere Rural had a population of 690 at the 2018 New Zealand census, an increase of 45 people (7.0%) since the 2013 census, and an increase of 153 people (28.5%) since the 2006 census.
It has a red brick facade and atrium. The brick building was formerly Palmerston North Technical High School (now Queen Elizabeth College, Rangitikei Street) and Palmerston North Teachers' College. Palmerston North Intermediate is a co-educational state intermediate school, [8] [9] with a roll of 703 as of November 2024. [10]
