If it had significance to the plot, it might have made sense, but since it doesn't, you could just as well state the ethnicity of every other character. Done "pay the cowboy $30,000 (equivalent to $170,000 in 2016)" Again, I'm not sure why the exact modern amount is necessary to the plot. Even saying "a large amount of money" would be enough.
