"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" (also sometimes called "Daffodils" [2]) is a lyric poem by William Wordsworth. Poetry (from the Greek word poiesis, "making") is a form of literary art that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic [1] [2] [3] qualities of language to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, literal or surface-level meanings. Any particular instance of poetry is called a poem and is written by a poet.
The poem is written in a single nine-line stanza, which greatly narrows in the last two lines. The poem's meter is an irregular mix of iambic tetrameter and dimeter , and the rhyme scheme (which is ABA ABC BCB) suggests but departs from the rigorous pattern of Dante 's terza rima .
The poem was created as part of a friendly competition in which Shelley and fellow poet Horace Smith each created a poem on the subject of Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II under the title of Ozymandias, the Greek name for the pharaoh. Shelley's poem explores the ravages of time and the oblivion to which the legacies of even the greatest are subject.
