Shinobi Legions is a 2-D side-scrolling hack and slash platform game in which the player controls Sho, the ninja protagonist of the game. The game has largely similar gameplay to previous games in the Shinobi series - The Revenge of Shinobi (1989) and Shinobi III: Return Of The Ninja Master - but also introduces new elements.

Shinobi, known in Japan as Shinobi 3D, is a Nintendo 3DS video game developed by Griptonite Games (a division of Foundation 9) and published by Sega as part of the Shinobi series, and was released worldwide in November 2011.
A key move in The Revenge of Shinobi is the somersault, which maximizes Joe's jumping height and enables him to throw eight shuriken at once in mid-air. Additionally, some stages consist of multiple layers, such as the first scene of the Military Base and the freeway in Area Code 818. Switching between layers is also done with the somersault move.
The play mechanics of The G.G. Shinobi are roughly based on the Genesis game The Revenge of Shinobi, but with the addition of a character-switching system.The player starts the game as Joe Musashi (the red ninja), whose goal is to rescue four kidnapped allies who are being held captive in different stages.
