Despite its name, the line never went all the way to the east coast of Florida. [1] The line was often used to transport mail, lumber, grain and other commodities. [2]
The north end of the Palmetto Subdivision is in East Tampa just north of the Alafia River, where it continues south from CSX's Tampa Terminal Subdivision. From East Tampa, it runs south and roughly parallels U.S. Route 41 through Ruskin to Palmetto. South of Palmetto, it crosses the Manatee River on a bascule bridge and enters Bradenton.

The Port completed the purchase of the line in 2009 and repaired the tunnels that led to the line's closure. The Port reopened the line as Coos Bay Rail Link. Service from Eugene to North Bend (111 miles) began in October 2011. [4] In 2012, the railroad is continuing with a $30 million rehabilitation of the line funded primarily by grants.
The southern terminus is the intersection of the John Ringling Causeway and Tamiami Trail (US 41-SR 45) in Sarasota; the northern terminus is the intersection of Gulf Drive, North and Manatee Avenue., West in Holmes Beach. Much of the northernmost five miles (8 km) has been designated Bradenton Beach Scenic Highway.
