Bridgeport Township was established in 1848. A sawmill was built there in 1849. By the mid-1860s there was also a shingle mill, three shingle factories and a salt well.By the 1880s the area had shifted to farming with the only mill being a grist mill built in 1878 by John and Martin Messner.

Bridgeport is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Saginaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. [4] The CDP had a population of 6,571 at the 2020 census . [ 2 ] The community is located within Bridgeport Township .
The Bridgeport-Spaulding Community School District is a school district headquartered in the Educational Services Center in Bridgeport, a community in Bridgeport Charter Township, Michigan. [2] It is a part of the Saginaw Intermediate School District and serves Bridgeport and portions of Buena Vista south of Hess Avenue. [3] [4]

The bridge was completed later that year, and served as the only access to Bridgeport from the south until 1958, when a new bridge was constructed to the south. The bridge was abandoned by Saginaw County in 1969 and reverted to Bridgeport Township. It was closed to highway traffic in about 1972 and converted to pedestrian use. [2]
