The Douglas SBD Dauntless is a World War II American naval scout plane and dive bomber that was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft from 1940 through 1944. The SBD ("Scout Bomber Douglas") was the United States Navy 's main carrier-based scout/dive bomber from mid-1940 through mid-1944.
Dauntless: The Battle of Midway was released direct to video in October 2019. [1] A DVD and Blu-ray edition was offered that included additional alternate endings, and two featurettes that documented the making of the film. Worldwide release of the film followed, including editions for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. [2]
The XBT-2 first flew on 25 April 1938, and after successful testing the Navy placed an order for 144 aircraft. In 1939 the aircraft designation was changed to the Douglas SBD-1 with the last 87 on order completed as SBD-2s. By this point, Northrop had become the El Segundo division of Douglas aircraft, hence the change.
The aircraft used in the film included Grumman F4F Wildcat fighters dressed up as Japanese aircraft, Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers, Douglas TBD Devastator, and Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bombers. A group of training aircraft was also in the film: Beech AT-11 Kansan, Curtiss SNC, North American AT-6 Texan, and Waco UPF-7 trainers. [6]
