Appanoose County was formed on February 17, 1843, from open territory. It was named for the Meskwaki Chief Appanoose , who did not engage in war against Black Hawk, advocating peace. The present county seat was formerly called Chaldea, and was later renamed to Senterville in honor of Congressman William Tandy Senter of Tennessee.
He was the namesake of the city of Tama, and Tama County, Iowa. The city is located near the Meskwaki Settlement, founded in 1857 when the Meskwaki were allowed to buy land in the state. Taimah's son was Appanoose; [4] he also became a chief. Appanoose County, Iowa was named for him.
After the county outgrew this building, court sessions were held in the Methodist and Presbyterian churches while another courthouse was built. It was a two-story, brick building built for $23,000.
