Ak-Sar-Ben Coliseum was the premiere ice rink and concert arena in Omaha for more than 70 years. Popular acts ranging from Frank Sinatra to Elvis Presley to Nirvana all performed to sold-out crowds. It was also home to the Omaha Knights, a minor league hockey team from 1959 to 1975.

In October 2015, the Ralston Arena was a venue for the Women's Flat Track Derby Association Division 1 roller derby Playoffs, hosted by local league, the Omaha Rollergirls. [8] The arena sold the naming rights to Liberty First Credit Union on a ten-year agreement and Ralston Arena was renamed on January 1, 2022. [9]
In 1931, the city acquired land north of Military Avenue and it became Benson Park. A 9-hole golf course opened in the park that year, but was closed in 1947. The golf course reopened in the 1960s with an 18-hole golf course. [1] The Omaha Tornado of 1975 lifted into the clouds at Benson Park, between the ice rink and lake. [2]
The venue is named after the influential 1990s-era group Slowdown Virginia, who had a strong influence on the "Omaha Sound". Slowdown has shows three to four nights each week, as well as a weekly pub quiz. The venue is open one hour before each event and stays open until around 2am, often offering a post-show Happy Hour.
The Center includes several performance areas. The Peter Kiewit Concert Hall seats 2,005 and has a stage size of 64 feet by 48 feet; it is modeled after European "shoebox" shaped halls. The Suzanne and Walter Scott Recital Hall is a "black box" space with seating for 486 people and a stage size of 40 feet by 32 feet.
