The Tennessee Department of Highways and Public Works was established by the Tennessee General Assembly in 1915 and tasked with constructing, maintaining, and improving roads throughout the state. That year, the 538-mile (866 km) Memphis to Bristol Highway, later State Route 1 , was designated as the first state highway in Tennessee.
The Fort Loudoun Lake impoundment of the Tennessee River comprises Louisville's northern border. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.5 square miles (35.0 km 2), of which 11.7 square miles (30.4 km 2) is land and 1.8 square miles (4.6 km 2), or 13.18%, is water. The triangle marker design was the only design until November 1983, when Tennessee divided its routes into primary routes and secondary or "arterial" routes with the adoption of a functional classification system, creating a primary marker and making the triangle marker the secondary marker; primary marker signs were posted in 1984.
Pleasant View is a city on the northern border of Cheatham County. Located in Middle Tennessee, it is part of the Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the city's population was 4,807. [5]
Blaine was originally known as Blaine's Crossroads (sometimes spelled "Blain"). During the early 19th century, it was located at the intersection of several important roads, [7] including the eastern terminus of the Emory Road (present day SR 61), which traversed northern Knox County, [10] the northern terminus of Indian Ridge Road, and the Great Indian Warpath, present-day U.S. Route 11W. [7]
