The Matara Municipal Council is the local council for Matara, the second largest city in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka, the third level administrative division of the country. The council was established under the Municipalities Ordinance of 1865 as the 13th municipal council of Sri Lanka.
Matara District is located in the south west of Sri Lanka and has an area of 1,282.5 square kilometres (495.2 sq mi). [2]It is represented in the Sri Lankan Parliament following the 2010 Sri Lankan parliamentary election by former Sri Lankan national cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya who stood for the United People's Freedom Alliance.

Matara (Sinhala: මාතර, romanized: Māthara; Tamil: மாத்தறை) is a major city in Sri Lanka, on the southern coast of Southern Province. It is the second largest city in Southern Province .
Matara in Proconsulari is an ancient suppressed and titular see of the Roman Catholic Church in North Africa. [1] It dates from the bishopric based in the Roman-era town of Matara, which has been identified with the modern town of Mateur, at 37°02′24″N 9°39′54″E in Tunisia. The current bishop is William J. Justice.
