Hi, In short, you can't. Unlike Xbox One or Series X|S controllers, the 360 wireless controllers are always wireless. The Play & Charge kit simply charges the battery, it does not send data. The only way to use an 360 wireless controller on a PC is via an Xbox 360 gaming receiver for Windows.
Yes, I have tried updating my Windows. Didn't work. Some stuff that might be important: My laptop has 3 USB ports. Two appear as USB 3.0, one appears as USB Composite Device. In the other one, the small light turns red. The light around the button does the as if not connected. Steam does not detect any controller.
Yes, you can. But you need to find and download the Xbox 360 drivers from an open source site. Microsoft had removed the drivers from the Microsoft store a long time ago so open source is your best bet. I would have sent a link but I don't really trust any of those sites enough to suggest them. So a quick Web search for "Xbox 360 drivers for ...

Just fixed this for myself on Windows 7, seems like the 'decade long windows expert' here is not of much help. Go to Device Manager > find the Unknown Device (which is your Xbox 360 controller connector) > right click on it > click Update Driver Software > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my ...
Set up a wired controller on Windows 10. Follow these steps to install your Xbox 360 wired controller on Windows 10: Plug the Xbox 360 controller into any USB 2.0 or 3.0 port on the computer. Windows 10 will automatically install drivers for your controller, so you won't have to download or install software other than Windows 10 updates.
If the Xbox 360 controller is a wired controller, then the controller can be used on the PC, just plug it in the USB port, and it should recognize it and let you use it. If it is a wireless Xbox 360 controller, then you will need the Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows to connect the controller to your PC. Thanks for your feedback, it helps ...
Right-click on the "Guitar Hero" device, click "Properties", "Driver" tab, "Update Driver" button, "Search drivers on PC". 4. Just click on "Choose from a list of drivers available on your PC". 5. Search for "Xbox 360 peripherals" (or something like that - actually I don't remember the english specific label) 6.
One possible solution is to uninstall the current driver for the adapter, and then reinstall it using the Windows Update Catalog. To do this, please follow these steps: - Go to Device Manager and right-click on the "Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows" under "Network Adapters".
