San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) is a public school district based in San Diego, California. Founded in 1854, it is the second largest school district in California. The district includes 121 elementary schools, 24 middle schools, 21 high schools, and 2 atypical schools. [2]
Class sizes in public schools are often much larger than those of private schools. Private schools reserve the right to take a limited number of students per year based on the requirements they set for student admission. Public schools have an open enrollment style system for student acceptance, which leads to larger classroom sizes.
Public school systems are supported by a combination of local, state, and federal government funding. Because a large portion of school revenues come from local property taxes, public schools vary widely in the resources they have available per student. Class size also varies from one district to another.
Average class size in the district varies by grade level, subject area and school. The district, however, reports that it provides staffing resources at a ratio of 35 students to one teacher. [25] Based on audited financial statements for the 2006–2007 fiscal year, the district spent an average of $9,030 to educate each student.
The ratio is often used as a proxy for class size, although various factors can lead to class size varying independently of student–teacher ratio (and vice versa). [2] In most cases, the student–teacher ratio will be significantly lower than the average class size. [3] Student–teacher ratios vary widely among developed countries. [4]
