Barton County is a county located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 11,637. [1] Its county seat is Lamar. [2] The county was organized in 1855 and named after U.S. Senator David Barton from Missouri. [3] President Harry S. Truman was born in Barton County in 1884.
As the county seat, Great Bend is the administrative center of Barton County. The county courthouse is located downtown, and most departments of the county government base their operations in the city. [41] Great Bend lies within Kansas's 1st U.S. Congressional District.
Barton County was drawn in the shape of a 30-by-30-mile (48 by 48 km) square. [8] According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 901 square miles (2,330 km 2), of which 895 square miles (2,320 km 2) is land and 5.2 square miles (13 km 2) (0.6%) is water.
