In strong guns such as the five shot .45's built by Hamilton Bowen and John Linebaugh, the 45 Colt can be loaded to .454 Casull levels which the .44 mag could never be loaded to.

    The .357 and .44's have a proper and useful rim that is almost impossible to pull 'over'. And they have more than enough power. Don't forget the .44-40, while old and "obsolete", it's still better than most would accept, being the equivalent of a .44 Mag from a handgun while being easy to handle. Lost_ID and klickitat.

Ballistics are 1489fps and 886fpe (#HSM-357-18-N). Second best is Buffalo Bore® 180gr LFN-GC @ 1400fps and 783fpe (#19A/20).

    The .44mag is very versatile - can be handloaded "soft & slow" or "Hot & HEAVY" !!! The 5 1/2" or 4" barrel makes for easy carry on your hip - while a longer barrel (6" to 8 3/8") would make an excellent hunting set up. The .357mag is also very versatile and has less recoil than the .44mag.

    The 1894C .357 is my truck gun, along with a .357 revo. If you have a strong .45 Colt like a Ruger New Model Blackhawk, a .45 Colt Marlin would be a nice match, but the .45 Marlins are CAS match rifles. They are available in 20" and 24" barrels. The 94C .357 has a 18 1/2" barrel, if that is important to you.
