The small free floating plants are susceptible to being blown into heaps which results in open water surface allowing algal growth. For this reason, long narrow ponds running perpendicular to the prevailing wind are recommended. The equal distribution of added nutrients in the ponds can be achieved by several inlets.
The leaves of Salvinia minima are small and oval, ranging from 0.4 to 2 centimeters in length. [1] Each rhizome of the fern floats close to the surface and has a joined set of leaves that branch off horizontally. [1] The leaves grow in joined sets of three, with two leaves floating on the surface and one leaf dissected, hanging underneath. [4]
Floating water-plantain grows predominantly in base-poor lakes, ponds and slow-flowing rivers with low to moderate nutrient levels, [11] [15] although in some cases it appears able to tolerate alkaline systems and / or high nutrient levels. [8] [16] It has proved able to colonise certain man-made freshwater systems, especially canals. [9] [11]
Limnobium laevigatum is a floating aquatic plant, which can be mistaken for water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) due to their superficial similarity.Juvenile plants grow in rosettes of floating leaves that lie prostrate upon the water surface, a distinguishing character of the juvenile plant is the presence of spongy aerenchyma tissue upon the abaxial surface (underside) of the leaf.
[17] [18] It outcompetes native aquatic plants, both floating and submerged. [ 15 ] [ 19 ] In 2011, Wu Fuqin et al. [ 20 ] tracked the results of Yunnan Dianchi Lake and also showed that water hyacinth could affect the photosynthesis of phytoplankton, submerged plants, and algae by water environment quality and inhibit their growth.
The tiny plants provide cover for the vulnerable fry and tadpoles of many fishes and amphibians. The plants are used as shelter by pond species, such as bullfrogs and newts, and fish such as bluegills. They also provide shade and, although frequently confused with them, can reduce certain light-generated growths of photoautotrophic algae.
