World Championship Soccer (ワールドカップサッカー) is a soccer game running on Sega's Mega-Tech [1] arcade cabinet system and was released as one of the first games for the Sega Genesis system in North America in September 1989.
It was released for the Mega Drive/Genesis, Master System, Game Gear, and Amiga. It spawned a sequel in 1994 titled F1 World Championship Edition, and the game engine was reused in Kawasaki Superbike Challenge. It was one of the most popular racing games for the Mega Drive/Genesis, mostly thanks to the smooth and fast game engine.

World Championship Soccer 2 has many features common to soccer games of the time, including choices of automatic defense and attack formations and strategies. There are a number of different game play options and tournaments the player can be a part of. The game has an option to replay the games from the 1986 and 1990 World Championships.
Only the Master System game gives official groups, teams and the fidelity schedule of the championship. Gameplay occurs at a bird's-eye view and sees the player given the choice of participating as any of the teams that featured in the tournament itself (excluding the Republic of Ireland), and no qualifying tournaments to reach the World Cup are available on this game.
