The Book of Tobit (/ ˈ t oʊ b ɪ t /) [a] [b] is an apocryphal Jewish work from the 3rd or early 2nd century BCE which describes how God tests the faithful, responds to prayers, and protects the covenant community (i.e., the Israelites). [1]

Tobias and the Angel is the traditional title of depictions in art of a passage from the Book of Tobit in which Tobias, son of Tobit, travels with the Archangel Raphael without realising he is an angel (5.5–6) and is then instructed by Raphael what to do with a giant fish he catches (6.2–9).

The Archangel Raphael Leaving Tobias' Family is a 1637 oil-on-panel painting by Rembrandt, now in the Louvre, in Paris, France. [1] The painting depicts a scene from the Book of Tobit, in which the archangel Raphael departs after guiding Tobias on his journey and helping to cure the blindness of his father, Tobit.
It is based on the story of Tobias from The Book of Tobit, one of the Apocrypha from the Dead Sea Scrolls. It tells the story of a young man, Tobias, who travels to Media to reclaim a debt from his father's friend, Gabael. He is accompanied by a guiding angel, Azarius. In the Book of Tobit, it is revealed that Azarius is actually the archangel ...
The stranger, however, has eyes only for the unseen devil, and he instructs Tobias to use the fish's heart to break Ashmodeus' spell. This enables Tobias to wed Sara without being killed, and they return to Nineveh. Tobias uses the gall to cure Tobit's blindness, and the stranger reveals himself as the angel Raphael.
Anna and the Blind Tobit, also titled Blind Tobit and his Wife, is a c. 1630 oil painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Rembrandt, and perhaps his pupil, Gerrit Dou. The picture hangs in room 22 of the National Gallery in London.
Raphael first appears in two works of this period, 1 Enoch, a collection of originally independent texts from the 3rd century BCE, and the Book of Tobit, from the early 2nd century BCE. [15] [16] In the oldest stratum of 1 Enoch (1 Enoch 9:1) he is one of the four named archangels, and in Tobit 12:11–15 he is one of seven. [17]
