St. Norbert is the world's first and only institution of higher learning, sponsored by the Premonstratensian order. Pennings later started a commerce program at the college for lay students before retiring in 1955. St. Norbert has made the NCAA Division III playoff 13 times, with the first appearance being in 1989. The Green Knights have advanced to the second round on two occasions, the first time in 2003 after a double overtime victory over Simpson College by a score of 26–20, and most recently in 2018 after a 31–7 win over Trine University.
The district is made up of historical core for the St. Norbert College campus. St. Joseph Priory, the original permanent home of Premonstratensians in North America, is located in the district. The district includes Old St. Joseph Church, which is still an active church. It was built in 1890 and renovated in 1998.
