Hilton Head Island, often referred to as simply Hilton Head, is a Lowcountry resort town and barrier island in Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States. [8] It is 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Savannah, Georgia (as the crow flies), and 95 miles (153 km) southwest of Charleston .

The Sea Pines Company was a real estate development group founded by General Joseph Bacon Fraser, Charles E. Fraser, and Joseph B. Fraser, Jr. In 1956. It developed Sea Pines Plantation, Amelia Island Plantation, Brandermill (Virginia), Kiawah Island, Palmas Del Mar (Puerto Rico), Hilton Head Plantation, Wintergreen Resort and more.
In recent years, Hilton Head has also developed a large permanent resident population. Hilton Head Island, which has an area of approximately 55 square miles (140 km 2 ), had a year-round population of 37,661 at the 2020 census , [ 3 ] although during the peak of summer vacation season the population can swell to 150,000.
On Hilton Head Island, US 278 was previously routed along what is now US 278 Business until a new toll road, named the Cross Island Parkway, opened on January 16, 1998. [8] The 6.8-mile (10.9 km) section of roadway [ 8 ] cost $83 million to build and was funded with a combination of state funds, federal funds, state highway bonds and tolls.
