By the middle of the century, the number of private academies decreased as academies gradually came under government control, sponsorships and patronage. The first private academy to become "official" and to this day the most prestigious of governmental academies is the Académie Française ("French Academy"), founded in 1634 by Cardinal Richelieu.

In 1866, a group of 35 artists founded the Chicago Academy of Design in a studio on Dearborn Street, with the intent to run a free school with its own art gallery. The organization was modeled after European art academies, such as the Royal Academy, with Academicians and Associate Academicians. The academy's charter was granted in March 1867.

Hyde Park–Kenwood Historic District is the name of the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) district on the South Side of Chicago that includes parts of the Hyde Park and Kenwood community areas of Chicago, Illinois. The northern part of this district overlaps with the officially designated Chicago Landmark Kenwood District.
