Bolivar was a full Stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail Period 1858-1861 at the old Franklin Hotel and Relay Station. The town layout was along the Boonville road that was the main road through the area during that time. [7] Bolivar experienced growth in 1884 when the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway was extended to that point. [8]
By proclamation of the mayor of the city of Bolivar, the field was renamed "Bolivar Municipal Airport, Gene Engledow Field" on October 12, 2013. [3] The renaming was to honor Gene Engledow, a local 100-year-old master pilot. Engledow has been licensed by the FAA for 77 years as of 2013. [4]

The city is located in west central Dallas County, approximately 2.5 miles west of the Niangua River. The city is served by U.S. Route 65 and Missouri state routes 73 and 32. Bolivar is about 18 miles to the west and Marshfield is about 22 miles to the southeast. Springfield lies 28 miles to the south-southwest along Route 65. [6]
