Old English did not always make a distinction between uppercase and lowercase, and at best had embossed or decorated letters indicating sections. Middle English capitalization in manuscripts remained haphazard, and was often done for visual aesthetics more than grammar; in poetry, the first letter of each line of verse is often capitalized.
Because it reduces the font size so that the capital letters marked up with the template are smaller than those of the running text, and makes the lower-case content smaller still, this template should only be used for acronyms or other material which is supposed to be capitalized regardless of style (e.g. Unicode character names).

Avoid using ALL CAPS and small caps for emphasis (for legitimate uses, see WP:Manual of Style/Capital letters § All caps). Italics are usually more appropriate. Double emphasis, such as italics and boldface, "italics in quotation marks", or italics and an exclamation point!, is unnecessary.
