The Silver Line is a six-route bus rapid transit system marketed as rapid transit.It is divided into two branches: Waterfront service (SL1, SL2, SL3, and the rush-hour SLW shuttle) that runs through the South Boston Transitway tunnel, and Washington Street service (SL4 and SL5) that runs on the surface via Washington Street.
World Trade Center station opened along with the rest of the South Boston Piers Transitway from South Station to Silver Line Way on December 17, 2004. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) operates 152 bus routes in the Greater Boston area. The MBTA has a policy objective to provide transit service within walking distance (defined as 0.25 miles (0.40 km)) for all residents living in areas with population densities greater than 5,000 inhabitants per square mile (1,900/km 2) within the MBTA's service district.
The Middlesex and Boston Street Railway buses were subsidized by the MBTA in September 1964, and they were assigned numbers from 20 to 36 (extended to 39 in November 1967, on the takeover of routes from Transit Bus Lines), duplicating existing MBTA numbers. The MBTA took over the M&B on June 30, 1972, and added a 5 in front.

Herald Street station is a street-level bus station on the Washington Street branch of the MBTA MBTA Silver Line bus rapid transit service. It is located on Washington Street just south of Herald Street in the South End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. In late 2017, the inbound stop was moved half a block north due to adjacent construction.
The 28 Mattapan Station–Ruggles Station route provides service through the Grove Hall and Mattapan neighborhoods on Blue Hill Avenue, a major radial arterial. Blue Hill Avenue has long been a busy trunk route; in 1945, route 29 Mattapan– Egleston peaked at 1.5 minute headways during the morning rush hour.
