Ansarul Islam is a militant Islamist group active in Burkina Faso and in Mali. It was founded by Boureima Dicko, also known as Ibrahim Malam Dicko, and it is the first native Jihadi group in Burkina Faso. The group cooperates closely with Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM). [4]

Since 2015, north and northeastern Burkina Faso has been embroiled in an insurgency by the Mali-based Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin, the Niger-based Islamic State in the Greater Sahara, and the homegrown Burkinabe Ansarul Islam. JNIM and Ansarul Islam are the dominant jihadist groups in Loroum province, located near the Malian border. [1]
Ansarul Islam was founded in November 2016 in the Foulsaré forest, coming to prominence in a press release where they claimed responsibility for the 2016 Nassoumbou attack against the Burkinabe army. In the press release, Dicko called himself the "commander of believers" and "guide of Ansarul Islam".
