La Bamba: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is the soundtrack album to the 1987 American biographical film of the same name, released on June 30, 1987 by Slash Records and Warner Bros. Records in North America and London Recordings in the rest of the world.
The LP yielded four U.S. chart singles: "Come On, Let's Go" (#42), "Donna" (#2), "La Bamba" (#22), and "That's My Little Suzie" (#55). The original pressings are black and sea green with circles around the outer edge. The print font for the track listings on these labels is the same font used on the back of the album cover.
Ritchie Valens' version of "La Bamba" became the first Latin song to enter the Hot 100 after its debut in 1959, [6] [7] [8] "Guantanamera" by the Sandpipers became the first one to reach the top 10 in 1966. [9] [10] Los Lobos' version of "La Bamba" became the first one to reach the number 1 spot in 1987.
Los Lobos covered the song in 1987 for the soundtrack of the 1987 Ritchie Valens biographical movie La Bamba starring Lou Diamond Phillips. Their version reached number 18 in the United Kingdom [4] and number 21 in the U.S. [2] It was also a track on Cars: The Video Game.
Nearly 40 years after its theatrical release, 'La Bamba' is being remade, but the film's original director and writer questions why rock 'n' roll star Ritchie Valens' life is being told, again.
The refrain interpolates parts of "La Bamba". A New Mixes maxi CD with multilingual remixes was also released which included versions in Spanish, French and German to increase the song's appeal. The song was a top 5 hit in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and also made number 25 on the UK Singles Chart.
The song was notably covered by Los Lobos for the soundtrack to the 1987 film La Bamba which portrayed the life story of Ritchie Valens. In one scene, Valens is shown singing it to his girlfriend Donna Ludwig on the telephone and in another scene Valens is shown recording the song in the recording studio, and in a third scene he is shown performing the song on American Bandstand.
