A brushless DC electric motor (BLDC), also known as an electronically commutated motor, is a synchronous motor using a direct current (DC) electric power supply. It uses an electronic controller to switch DC currents to the motor windings producing magnetic fields that effectively rotate in space and which the permanent magnet rotor follows.
The motor used a two-pole brushless rotor with a digital controller. Dyson said its efficiency was 84%, which was less than the 96% efficiency that is achieved in some brushless designs. [citation needed] In order to deal with the high speed and centrifugal forces, the impeller is made of carbon fibre reinforced polymer; the shaft is steel. [3]
Kiekhaefer designed motors that withstood the elements better than his competition and called the motor Mercury (taking advantage of the "Mercury" Motor Car popularity at the time) whilst adopting the logo of the Roman god Mercury. [3] Kiekhaefer took more than 16,000 orders at the 1940 New York Boat Show.
Axial motors have been commonly used for low-power applications, especially in tightly integrated electronics since the motor can be built directly upon a printed circuit board (PCB), and can use PCB traces as the stator windings. High-power, brushless axial motors are more recent, but are beginning to see usage in some electric vehicles. [8]
In January 1954, the company changed its name to Suzuki Motor Co., Ltd. A year later, the first Suzuki automobile, Suzulight, went on sale. In 1965, the company marketed their first Suzuki outboard motor, D55. [5] When the second outboard motor, DT5, was produced in 1977, the corporation marketed it in the U.S. under the new brand Suzuki Marine.
Some boats use AC motors or permanent magnet brushless motors. The advantages of these are the lack of commutators which can wear out or fail and the often lower currents allowing thinner cables; the disadvantages are the total reliance on the required electronic controllers and the usually high voltages which require a high standard of insulation.
