The highway connects the Carrollton area with the Tennessee state line, via Villa Rica, Dallas, Cartersville, and Chatsworth. The portion of the highway from just northeast of Carrollton to Villa Rica was formerly the path of US 78S. When that highway was decommissioned, it was redesignated as US 78 Alternate.

In 1926, its entire length consisted of a "sand clay or top soil" surface and was redesignated as a southern branch of SR 8.
