Clement Clarke Moore (July 15, 1779 – July 10, 1863) was an American writer, scholar and real estate developer. He is best known as author of the Christmas poem " A Visit from St. Nicholas ", which first named each of Santa Claus's reindeer .

During the Civil War, Moore was a captain in the 20th Massachusetts Infantry in the Union Army. Clement Clarke Moore and his wife lost their 6th child, daughter Emily, on April 19, 1828, age 6yrs and 6 days. His wife died on April 4th, 1830. Second eldest daughter, Charity, died on Dec. 14, 1830 at age 14.
